Introduction

On Sunday February 10, 2008 we took a fine backcountry ski tour of Mayfower Gulch, off Highway 91 betweeen Leadville and Minturn, Colorado. It's a relatively short haul from the trailhead through a serene, gently upsloping trail through snowladen lodgepole pines to an open meadow from which arise the stunning peaks of the Tenmile range. This is also the site of an old silver mine called the Boston Camp - a few cabins and an odd timber pavilion are all that remain. On this day, there were just a few skiers and their very happy dogs, brilliant sunshine and pristine fields of snow, and a gentle winter breeze. What a perfect day!
